Michael Fitzmaurice is South Dakota’s lone surviving Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. It is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force. Fitzmaurice was honored for his personal bravery and self-sacrifice serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
