Go the Extra Dial!

Golden West customers have been getting in a good finger workout since June, when 10-digit dialing became mandatory across most of the United States. Regardless of how much you embrace change, there are going to be a few questions whenever you’re getting used to a new process or procedure.

The change in dialing procedure did not change what was considered a long distance call and what was not, nor did it impact long distance rates. Still, local vs. long distance dialing has been a common question for the Golden West Help Desk. Understanding when (and when not) to dial “1” before the area code will help ensure a smooth calling experience.

Instructions for Completing Phone Calls

To complete a call from your Golden West landline, the following rules apply:

•  All Calls – You must dial the area code + telephone number for all calls. Calls that were local before this change are still local calls now.

•  Long Distance Calls – If you’re calling a long distance number, you need to dial 1 before the area code. Calls that were long distance before this change are still long distance calls now.

In the Golden West exchanges, if the number you are calling is long distance and you fail to dial 1 before the 10-digit number, you’ll hear a recording that states, “You must dial 1 or 0 when calling this number.”

If the South Dakota number you are calling is local and you dial 1 before the 10-digit number, you’ll hear a recording that says, “Your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and try again.”

If you’re using or calling a cellphone, local OR long distance procedures may apply. You’ll have to listen to what the recorded message says and follow the instructions.
