With a newborn son at home and a garage serving as their first shop, Heath and Monie Siemonsma began connecting people to electricity through residential, industrial, and agricultural projects about 25 years ago.
“When we started, started with just me and Monie, so we worked nights and weekends,” Heath says. “At that time, there weren’t many electricians in the area. Today, we’ve built a team that allows us to provide more personalized service to our customers.”
Now, that newborn and his two brothers – Brayden, Connor, and Alex – work alongside their parents in their Humboldt shop and on job sites. They help Heath and his team wire homes during remodels, connect farmers to their shops and grain bins, and work on commercial buildings.
As the business has grown to about 15 people, Monie works behind the scenes handling finances, answering customer questions, and managing office operations. Monie and Heath take pride in developing customer relationships, whether it’s serving a relative around the corner or a business several towns away.
Prior to starting the family business, Heath worked as an electrician for another company and Monie worked in corporate finance for 20 years. The couple opened the business after recognizing the need for contractors in their hometown.
“We thought it was time to see what we could do as a team,” Monie says. “We’ve grown so much over the years, and we are incredibly grateful for our employees. They’re dedicated, stay with us a long time, and we wouldn’t be where we are without them.”
Monie says Siemonsma Electric grew through word-of-mouth referrals in town and the surrounding areas. Many friends and local business owners worked together, supporting each other to help their businesses grow.
Brayden, their oldest, works full-time for Siemonsma Electric after completing a four-year apprenticeship. Their second son, Connor, recently earned a masters degree in accounting from Northern State University and is renovating his first home in Humboldt while contributing to the family business. Alex will be a senior in high school and works for the company part-time.
While the internet is important to their work, the company also values their relationship with Golden West. Heath says that during many of his jobs, he leaves a spot for Golden West technicians to install fiber-optic cables in homes.
“The Golden West employees around the area know us on a first-name basis, and we know their names too,” Monie says. “They are fantastic to work with and what Golden West offers with their high-speed network around this area has been greatly beneficial.”
Heath and Monie are excited for their sons’ futures and enjoy passing their knowledge on to the next generation. They appreciate how their business has grown and remain committed to sharing their knowledge and mentoring young electricians. Looking back on nearly 25 years of growth, they’re grateful for the relationships they’ve built and are excited for what lies ahead.
